A Message From a Fellow Veteran

I spent 22 years in the United States Air Force. I started operating heavy equipment on runways, served as the Superintendent of Training for the NATO Civil Engineering Contingency Operations School at Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany, and ended my career teaching cyber warfare to officers.

I know what it's like to transition from military life. And I know how confusing it is to figure out how TRICARE, VA healthcare, and Medicare all fit together. That's why I wrote an entire chapter dedicated to veterans — and why I offer free, no-pressure Medicare consultations to every veteran in Colorado.

“You served your country. Now let me serve you. No sales pitch — just straight answers from someone who's been where you are.”
Key Questions Answered

What Every Veteran Needs to Know About Medicare

Yes. TRICARE For Life (TFL) requires you to have Medicare Part A and Part B. TFL acts as a supplement to Medicare — Medicare pays first, then TFL covers most of what's left. If you don't enroll in Part B, you lose your TFL coverage. This is one of the most common mistakes veterans make.
VA healthcare is not considered creditable coverage for Medicare Part B purposes. If you only use the VA and skip Part B, you may face permanent late enrollment penalties if you later decide to enroll. Many veterans enroll in Part B as a safety net — giving them access to any doctor, not just VA facilities, without penalty risk.
No. VA healthcare is a separate system with its own facilities, providers, and rules. Medicare is accepted by virtually every doctor and hospital in the country. Having both gives you maximum flexibility — use the VA when it's convenient, and use Medicare when you need care outside the VA system.
It depends on your situation. If you have TRICARE For Life, you may not need either — TFL already fills most Medicare gaps. If you rely primarily on VA healthcare, a low-cost Medicare Advantage plan could give you additional options outside the VA. Each situation is different, which is exactly why a free consultation with someone who understands both military benefits and Medicare is so valuable.
Some veterans qualify for Medicare's Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy) program, which reduces Part D prescription drug costs. Your VA disability rating and income level affect eligibility. We can help determine if you qualify and assist with the application.
